Rutile Titanium dioxide Titanium dioxide, an inorganic compound with the chemical formula TiO2, is a white solid or powdered amphoteric oxide with a molecular weight of 79.866. It has non-toxicity, optimal opacity, optimal whiteness and brightness, and is considered to be one of the best performing white pigments in the world today. Titanium dioxide has strong adhesion, is not easy to start chemical changes, and is always snow white. It is widely used in paint, plastic, paper making, printing ink, chemical fibre, rubber, cosmetics and other industries. It has a high melting point and is also used to make refractory glass, glazes, enamels, terra cotta, and high-temperature resistant labware. Titanium dioxide can be extracted from rutile by acid decomposition or obtained by decomposition of titanium tetrachloride. Titanium dioxide in nature exists in three isotopic forms: rutile, anatase and titanium plate, in addition to several synthetic crystal forms.
