Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a colorless transparent liquid that can be miscible with water and most organic solvents. Pure dimethylformamide has a special odor, while industrial or deteriorated dimethylformamide has a fishy odor because it contains impurities of dimethylamine. The source of the name is because it is a dimethyl substitute of formamide (formamide), and both methyl groups are located on N (nitrogen) atom. It is a common solvent for chemical reactions.
