Ethylene glycol/MEG is also known as ethylene glycol, 1, 2-ethylenediol, or EG for short. Chemical formula is (CH2OH)2, is the simplest dihydric alcohol. Glycol is colorless, odorless, sweet liquid, low toxicity to animals, glycol can be mutually soluble with water, acetone, but in the ether class solubility is small. Used as solvent, antifreeze and synthetic polyester raw materials. The polymer of ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol (PEG), is a phase transfer catalyst and is also used in cell fusion; Its nitrate is an explosive.
It is mainly used in the preparation of antifreeze for automobile cooling system and production of polyethylene terephthalate, and also used in the production of synthetic resins, solvents, lubricants, surfactants, softeners, humidifiers
Ethylene glycol is the simplest aliphatic dihydric alcohol with chemical properties of alcohols such as being capable of generating ether, ester, or being oxidized into acid or aldehyde as well as being condensed to form ether or being substituted by halogen. Its reaction with acyl chloride or acid anhydride generally forms di-esters.
